What better time to write this blog post, over 7 months after I went and already planning the best one. Jk.. I just suck at blogging.
I travelled to Munich from Madrid for the middle weekend of Oktoberfest. If you don’t know what Oktoberfest is, it’s a beer festival in Munich, Germany over 3 weeks in September (why is it not Septemberfest??). I stayed with Stoke Travel, an Australian travel company. Stoke is such an awesome place to stay if you love a party and don’t mind camping and at €60 for a tent, sleeping bag and airbed, breakfast and dinner and of course unlimited beer and sangria, it’s a bloody bargain.
I’m reluctant to admit that I didn’t actually see any of Munich in the 3 days I was there, I headed straight from the airport to the Stoke camp site, then the next 2 days to the beer halls. Yeah you could say I’m cultured.
I loved staying with Stoke, but I recommend buying your dirndl or lederhosen in Munich when you arrive, there are loads of shops that sell them kind of cheaply, as opposed to getting them through Stoke. Or even buy it online. But you definitely need one!!
I stayed for 3 nights. I didn’t arrive until after 7pm on the Friday so I didn’t head to the beer tents, just drank at the campsite, which was great. But we had 2 huge days at the beer tents. It’s honestly so much fun, every is just drinking from these huuuuge beer glasses all day, standing on tables and singing songs.
I highly, highly recommend this experience, even if you’re not that into beer, go for the atmosphere. I loved it so much that I’m going again this year.
What tips can I give? Stay for an extra day so you can see the city! Tip your beer maids so they come back to your table! Drink as much beer as you can and embrace the atmosphere! Eat the biggest pretzels of your life! HAVE FUN!
